SBS
SBS – Simple braid system – is a braiding system in which each yarn is braided into the sheath individually. The result is a more compact sheath with a smoother surface.
Ropes with an SBS sheath have a smoother surface, show lower friction forces and are more resistant to abrasion and to damage from rubbing against rock.
How the SBS system works
SBS – Simple braid system – is a system in which each yarn is braided into the sheath individually, so it does not run in pairs one after another. The result of this braiding is a more compact sheath.
An SBS sheath has a smoother surface than a standard tandem one. That means ropes with this sheath show lower friction forces, which makes them more resistant to abrasion and to damage caused by rubbing against rock.
What the SBS sheath brings
Thanks to the compactness of the sheath, small particles also work their way in between the fibres less, which reduces damage to the inner structure of the sheath and the rope.
Another benefit is that ropes with an SBS sheath feel nicer to the touch, the rope is easier to handle, it “runs” better and is superbly flexible.
Because there is less friction, the ropes are more slippery and faster in belay devices, so it is good to have some experience and practice with belaying. If you haven't used this type of rope before, try belaying on an indoor or practice wall.
