Where are you from and what are your favorite climbing areas in the US?
SoCal, I love Tuolumne, Smith Rock, and Bishop!
When did you start climbing and how?
I started climbing at 16, I was asked on a date to the climbing gym (it was actually my first date!) and immediately got a month membership.
What are you doing if you're not climbing?
Being creative. I love making films and writing whenever I can.
Can you explain what is origin of your name "Hazelnutt”?
It was a Track & Field nickname I was given in high school and it kinda stuck! It’s really close to my real last name, Hazlett, so teammates would yell “let’s go Hazelnutt!’ for my races. I kinda missed the memo where everyone started using their real names on instagram lol.
You improved yourself in falling a lot during climbing. If you can give only one piece of advice to people who are afraid of falling, what would it be?
Practice!!! And be kind to yourself. Taking a huge whip won’t be useful, but if you ease in and meet yourself where you’re at, it gets a lot better.
How important for your climbing was the trip to Spain in 2021 for you? Can you describe this time in your life? This trip to Catalunya was everything. It was a definitive marker for when I decided to try and take climbing seriously. Well, I at least career wise— I could never stop being playful on the wall! I really challenged myself to go all-in with climbing and climbing related media, seeing if this could be a viable way to live my life. I went full dirtbag, and loved every minute of it. I’m starting to return to this lifestyle more and more now that I feel a bit more settled in my life as a professional climber.
What are your favorite climbing areas in Europe?
All of Catalunya, I loved visiting Switzerland (magic wood) as well. There’s still so much rock I have yet to explore in Europe.
Do you know something about Czech climbing areas? I mean especially about Czech sandstone climbing?
I know that y’all are wild with the gear. I’m not sure if I could hang. :-)
You climb a lot with Tom Randall. Can we expect a huge focus on crack climbing in the near future?
Oh god no. Cracks aren’t my thing everyone, let’s get that out in the open. Will I occasionally get coaxed into doing a crack climb? Absolutely, I’m very persuadable and like a good ego bash. But I won’t seek it myself, that’s for sure.
Is there a hair color combination that you are afraid of?
HAHA! I think orange and yellow together might be too much. Which is wild because I always say “too much is almost enough” but I think that might cross a line. Will try it out and report back.
What is your favorite model of Tendon rope and why?
I love your Tendon Master 8.6 rope. It’s PERFECT for redpointing really long routes, and I love me my long routes!
